The piece

Nº 4 covers the whole head with a pattern repeated by hand: rows of 0s and 1s in light green thread, set on black knit. No two digits are exactly the same shape, and their rows follow the curve of the face, from the top of the head down to the chin. They spell out a message in binary code that is the artist's own.

Around the openings and on top, threads are left loose and escape from the knit like a frayed fringe. A line of red thread crosses the lower face, at mouth level. Like an electronic system, the threads represent or recall copper or gold wires.

The photos were taken at night, under colored lights: the embroidered digits pick up the color of the lighting — green, blue, pink. It's a ski mask made to be seen worn, in motion.

The story of the piece

The ski mask refers to electronic circuits and computer code, through inscriptions in binary code that are the artist's own. The green of the code is slightly fluorescent and shiny, to bring out the feeling of code in motion.

It draws its inspiration from technology, the Matrix aesthetic and electronics, while keeping a code and a story that belong to its owner.

Order a piece in this spirit

This ski mask is one-of-a-kind: it will never be made again exactly the same. But it can be the starting point for your own piece — a different knit color, a different design, your name or your phrase embroidered on it. Booking an appointment is mandatory; making the piece then takes about 1 month.

Size and care

Measurements (head circumference above all) take two minutes with a tape measure: see the size guide. Embroidered knit is washed by hand, in cold water, without rubbing the embroidery, and dried flat: see the care guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is every ski mask one-of-a-kind?

Yes. Every HOODLUMROUGE ski mask is numbered, embroidered and illustrated by hand for one person only. A piece is never reproduced exactly the same.

Can I buy a ski mask from the collection?

All the pieces in the collection are sold: they stay online as an archive. To get one, you order a new piece in the same spirit — never a copy.

How do I order a custom ski mask?

Write through the contact page to book an appointment: booking is mandatory before any piece is made. The whole process is laid out on the custom order page.

How long does it take to make a ski mask?

About 1 month of work after the appointment.

What are the ski masks made of?

The current pieces combine orlon, acrylic, cotton and silk. Some come with a box made of cardboard, wax, watercolor ink and silver.

How do I choose the right size?

Head circumference is the main measurement; the rest is discussed at the appointment. The size guide explains how to take them.

How do I wash an embroidered ski mask?

By hand, in cold water, without rubbing the embroidery, then dry it flat. Every step is on the care guide page.
